Frequently Asked Questions

Caring for your stone jewelry

Handmade jewelry is not indestructible—but if you care for your jewelry, it will last. All damage occurring to a piece under your care is your responsibility. We include care cards with each order and/or list clear information on our website that is readily accessible. All damage, including normal wear and tear, is the owner’s sole responsibility.

Please note that Hinge Designs is not responsible for lost, broken, chipped, cracked, or damaged stones that you have purchased from us once it has left our hands. While this rarely happens, some stones are more fragile than others. The type of wear that rings can go through is extensive. Caring for your piece to the best of your ability will help preserve your piece...even when you're careful, accidents do happen. I am happy to repair pieces, scuff out chips and if something should break I may be able to repair it, see below for more information.

The jewelry you are purchasing is made to last, but like all handmade items, it is delicate. Care is necessary and is the sole responsibility of the wearer. I would advise that you should remove your jewelry before sleeping, swimming, or bathing. Colors of certain stones may change over time as they absorb the oils from your skin, I try to specify if this might happen but every stone is unique and sometimes will change as you wear it. You may clean your jewelry with clear soap and water, if metals from other rings adds marks to your rings please use the rough side of a kitchen sponge to carefully rub it off.

Where do you find all of your stones?

I find them all over! Some come from my adventures to the beach. I often travel to different gem shows, and I try to work with families and smaller companies that work directly with mines. I also am lucky to work with a few different miners myself. Shout out to my friend John Lincoln Lovely at Sticks n’ Stones in Waterville, NY where I get all of my Herkimer Diamonds!

Are the stones fragile?

Each piece is hand carved out of natural stone. While each piece is quite sturdy and have been tumbled and tested in the studio they are still made of stone and can be vulnerable when dropped or knocked against a hard surface. Stones should withstand other normal wear and tear.

If my piece does break what can I do?

Please email me! I do not accept any returns of broken pieces unless they are broken in shipping However if you have all of the pieces it is more than likely that I can repair your broken ring or earrings. Repairs are free but you will be responsible for the postage to get the piece back to me. My email is margehinge@gmail.com
